Oxford United are close to signing Middlesbrough winger Marcus Browne on a permanent basis, according to Football Insider.

The 24-year-old was set to join Charlton but the deal collapsed yesterday, leaving the U’s to pounce on the former West Ham man.

Now, the report suggests Browne has agreed a permanent deal with the U’s and could become the club’s first signing of the January transfer window.

The winger has enjoyed two successful loan spells at Grenoble Road, scoring 14 times and adding nine assists from 60 appearances. He was also a pivotal part of the squad as the U’s reached the 2019/20 League One playoff final, which they lost against Wycombe.

However, Browne hasn’t featured for Boro since suffering a cruciate ligament injury in January 2021 and has only managed two goals in 22 outings for the Championship club. He is under contract until next summer but manager Chris Wilder has opened the door for his departure.
