Oxford United are looking to bring in former Sheffield United defender Ben Heneghan, according to Alan Nixon.

The 27-year-old was released by the Blades in the summer following two seasons on loan at Blackpool.

According to the report, Wigan Athletic are also interested in the former Motherwell defender but don’t have any space in the squad as a result of the salary cap and player limit.

The centre back would be a welcome addition to Karl Robinson’s side, who have one of the worst defences in League One after eight games with 16 goals conceded.

The U’s boss is still on the lookout for a defender and Heneghan, who can also cover as a right-back, would be a good fit.

He made 84 appearances at Chester before a move to Scotland, where he turned out 50 times for the Scottish Premiership outfit. Time at Bramall Lane was limited but featured 80 times for Blackpool during his two seasons in the north-west.

The 27-year-old has also scored 14 goals throughout his career, including four while playing in League One.
