U’s Linked With Derby Winger

|

Oxford United have shown interest in Derby County winger Josh Shonibare, according to Football Insider. However, the League One side face competition from Dutch sides Go Ahead Eagles and Roda JC.

The 22-year-old is in high demand and has been given permission to leave on a season-long loan by Rams boss Phillip Cocu.

According to sources at the Football Insider, both Eerste Division outfits have made direct contact with the Derby boss, but a move elsewhere in England could help the youngster ahead of a return to Pride Park.

The left-winger, who can also play behind the centre forward, could be reunited with former Rams U23 coach Craig Short, who joined the U’s in the summer.

The 22-year-old joined Derby from semi-professional side Greenwich Borough in 2018 and has become a regular for the Rams U23 side.

Although he is yet to feature for the first team, Shonibare scored during the Derby County U23’s 3-3 draw with Manchester City U23’s in the opening match of the Premier League 2 season. He has made a total of 36 appearances for the U23 side, scoring six times and adding one assist.

The left-midfield position is an area that U’s boss is keen to add to. Joel Cooper is the clubs only natural left-winger at the club, so the arrival of Shonibare could help the squad.
