Oxford United are behind League One rivals Sheffield Wednesday in the chase for Everton striker Tom Cannon, according to Alan Dixon.

The 20-year-old has been in fine form for Everton’s U21 side and it looked as though it would lead to first-team football with the Toffees. But having recalled Ellis Simms from Sunderland, it appears a loan move for Cannon will suit both parties.

Oxford, Fleetwood and Sheffield Wednesday have all shown interest in the striker but the Owls are leading the race.

That said, if the U’s can convince the Everton hierarchy that he would get more game time at Grenoble Road then it could swing a move in their favour.

Oxford currently have Matty Taylor misfiring and youngster Gatlin O’Donkor in attack, while loanee Kyle Joseph is sidelined through injury. They also reportedly showed interest in Cannon in the summer transfer window but he stayed at Goodison Park.
