“It will probably make it a tasty affair” – Matty Taylor

New Oxford United signing Matty Taylor knows that his first return to the Memorial Stadium tomorrow will be a ‘tasty affair’.

The 29-year-old striker, who left Rovers to join rivals Bristol City in 2017, has rejoined his boyhood club and will be looking to open his U’s account against his former side.

Reported by the Bristol Post, Taylor said: “I’ve always tended to do well against Oxford, I don’t know if I was a bit more fired up because you want to play well against your hometown club to show them what they’re missing.

“Now I’m on the other side wearing the yellow shirt and trying to beat them. I’m not sure what sort of reception I’ll get, but I’m ready for the challenge. I’m sure there will be a lot of banter with the songs and it will probably make it a tasty affair.”

Taylor was an integral part of the Gas squad that achieved back to back promotions from the Conference to League One, scoring 68 goals from 134 appearances.

But after City activated his release clause, the forward made the move south of the river to the League One sides Championship rivals.

But injuries and a failure to secure a regular first-team spot with the Robins saw Taylor searching for first-team football, and Oxford seemed the perfect club.

Taylor made his second U’s debut on Tuesday night as Oxford lost at home against Burton Albion, but despite not opening his account, the forward looked lively up top, and he will be a shrewd signing for Karl Robinson’s side.
