New Striker Joins The U’s

It’s the news that Oxford United fans have waited all summer to hear: The U’s have been signed a striker!

And this striker, in particular, needs no introduction. Matty Taylor has joined the U’s on a season-long loan from Bristol City, with the option to sign the forward in the summer.

Rumours started spreading last week when the Oxford-born striker was spotted at the Kassam Stadium as the U’s edged out Peterborough United in their League One clash.

As the paperwork was filed before midday, Taylor can feature against Burton Albion tomorrow night.

Robinson told the Oxford Mail: “It was a crazy weekend. We’re ecstatic. I don’t think there are many better No 9s in the league. This is one we’re all excited about.”

Taylor made eleven appearances for the U’s, coming through the youth system, before moving to Forest Green Rovers.

The forward then joined Bristol Rovers, winning back to back promotions as the Gas shot from the Conference to League One. During his three years at the club, he scored 61 times from 118 league appearances.

But, after rivals Bristol City activated the striker’s release clause, he found himself at the Championship side. But the 29-year-old has struggled to reach the heights with the Robins, scoring seven league goals from 66 appearances

Taylor said: “It’s always been in the back of my mind that I wanted to come back here at some stage, but you just never truly know.

“It’s worked out I’m here now and I’m delighted. I’m itching to get out on the pitch now.”

He came close to joining United in 2016, with then-head coach Michael Appleton believing they had shaken hands on a deal, but the striker went on to sign a new contract with Rovers.
