Thorne, who knows United head coach Karl Robinson through the same agent, told the Oxford Mail: “It was important for me to get out and play for someone who trusts me.

“It’s important for me to get games under my belt, so I think it was the right time for both parties and I’m looking forward to it. There were a couple of options but there would be no point in me going somewhere that doesn’t play the way that suits me. It would do me no favours.

“I’m always going to be this kind of player and that’s not going to change. I had to pick carefully and I think this ticked all the boxes at the right time.”

The U’s have one of the best midfields in League One, and an injury-free Thorne will certainly help that case.

Robinson said: “At one stage George Thorne was the best player in the Championship until he had that leg break (in 2016).

“We spoke to two or three Luton players and they were saying he was the best player in training, but the manager kept with the same players because they were winning, which is understandable.”

Thorne hasn’t taken in much pre-season and as a result, is short of fitness. It could be a few weeks before makes an appearance for the club, but it’s another quality signing by the U’s.
