Oxford United goalkeeper Jack Stevens has departed the club and joined fellow League One side, Cambridge United.

The 25-year-old, who penned a new long-term deal last summer before joining Port Vale on a season-long loan, joins the other U’s on an initial free transfer but with the club retaining a future interest in the player.

The Oxford Mail report that they believe the “future interest” is a sell-on fee.

Stevens, who came through the club’s academy, turned out 74 times since making his debut in 2019.

Last season, he joined Port Vale on loan despite becoming the club’s number one during the previous campaign.

The U’s had three goalkeepers on the books in Simon Eastwood and Ed McGinty so offloading one made sense, particularly with transfer interest in Brighton’s James Beadle picking up pace.

Speaking to Cambridge’s club website, Stevens said: “I am really excited. It’s good to get it over the line.

“It’s a good time for me to settle somewhere, hopefully play regular football and be somewhere really positive.

“It feels like it fits and I am really happy to be here. I know the league really well and I am looking to show everyone how good of a goalkeeper I am.”
