Oxford United are eyeing up a move for Arsenal midfielder Tim Akinola, according to the Oxford Mail.
There have been murmurs of a move for the past week but this is the first reliable link to the Nigerian.
The 22-year-old defensive midfielder joined the Gunners from Huddersfield Town in August 2020.
However, he is yet to make a senior appearance for Mikel Arteta’s side but did feature for the U21s in the Football League Trophy. The midfielder has made 43 appearances for the Gunners at youth level.
Last season, Akinola joined National League side Chesterfield but failed to gain promotion to League Two after defeat against Notts County in the playoff final. The midfielder made 31 appearances for the Spireites.
He has one year left on his current deal at the Emirates so it’s unsure whether the U’s are looking to loan or buy the midfielder.
It’s a position that Liam Manning needs cover following the long-term injury to Alex Gorrin.
