Oxford United began life under Des Buckingham with defeat on the road at strugglers Cheltenham.

Both teams ended the match with ten men but a Robins goal in each half sealed the win for the hosts.

Here are three talking points from the game.

Line-Up

Buckingham was never going to make wholesale changes to a side that sat second in the table ahead of kick-off, but the new head coach was without Elliott Moore through suspension and Greg Leigh after he picked up a knock while playing for Jamaica.

James Beadle started in goal behind a back four of Ciaron Brown, Jordan Thorniley, Stephan Negru and Fin Stevens.

Marcus McGuane and Cameron Brannagan sat behind a three of Billy Bodin, Ruben Rodrigues and Stanley Mills while Mark Harris led the line.

Ruben Rodrigues

After arguably his best performance of the season last time out at Leyton Orient, Rodrigues really struggled at Whaddon Road.

The midfielder constantly lost the ball and struggled to make critical passes, while he also blazed an effort over from eight yards out when they were one goal down.

He picked up a first booking for dissent after constantly berating the referee before being shown a second yellow for a soft foul.

Second Best All Over

Despite having more possession, more shots and more passes, Oxford were second-best in the game.

Cheltenham were more physical and more confident in front of goal (ironically) while Oxford struggled to get the basics right with several unnecessary errors. Also, both of the host’s goals came from set pieces.

A change in formation to a back three seemed to help the U’s and, despite seeing Rodrigues sent off, looked the likelier side to score but the Robins’ second goal came despite the linesman raising his flag for offside.
