Oxford United midfield Alex Rodriguez Gorrin has signed a one-year contract extension with the club.

The 28-year-old was out of contract in the summer but has finally agreed to a new deal ahead of the 2022/23 season.

Since his arrival from Motherwell in 2019, the Spaniard has been an influential player by sitting in front of the back four.

He racked up 101 U’s appearances before picking up an ACL injury in Oxford’s FA Cup first-round draw against Bristol Rovers in November, which ruled him out for the rest of the campaign.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Gorrin said: “That was so frustrating, watching the team and seeing us go so close to promotion again but knowing I couldn’t play a part.

“But I have been working hard all summer and will hopefully get a good pre-season and be able to play a full part in what we hope will be a successful season.

“I love being at Oxford- the players and staff are a very tight group and the fans have been amazing with me. I can’t wait to report back and get going again.”

At the Time of his injury, Oxford manager Karl Robinson stated the club would offer him a fresh deal but it was also reported that several other League One clubs had shown interest in the 28-year-old.

However, with a new deal signed, U’s fans will be hoping that his influence on the pitch can be rediscovered after a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
