While it may be a different cup competition from when the sides previously met in 2016, their FA Cup success against the top flight side has gone down in history.

But it wasn’t just victory over Swansea the U’s enjoyed as they impressed at this stage in the Carabao Cup of the same season.

Having drawn 1-1 against Crawley on the opening day of the 2015/16 League Two campaign, Michael Appleton’s U’s travelled to Brentford in the first round of the Carabao Cup. Three goals inside 12 minutes, including a sensational long-range effort from Kemar Roofe, set Oxford on their way to an emphatic 4-0 victory at Griffin Park.

Having seen off rivals Swindon in the Football League Trophy, the U’s picked up FA Cup wins against Braintree (following a replay) and Forest Green before setting up a clash against the Premier League outfit.

The favourites took the lead at Grenoble Road but when Liam Sercombe netted a penalty on the stroke of halftime, some sensed a shock was on the cards.

Up step Roofe – the man that netted a brace against the Robins would add another two against another team that began with the same letter. Firstly, the forward curled home a beauty into the bottom corner before rounding off a quick counter-attack with a composed finish.

Although Swansea reduced the deficit, the U’s held on to secure the win, which went down as the fifth biggest FA Cup upset ranked in terms of statistical improbability.

Oxford may have lost 3-0 against Blackburn in the fourth round but they ended the campaign with promotion back into League One.

This fixture stands out, and rightfully so. If Karl Robinson’s side can pull off an upset, it could be the catalyst for another memorable campaign full of remarkable results.
