Des Buckingham picked up his first league win with a 3-0 victory over Burton.

A Ruben Rodrigues brace and sensational strike from Marcus McGuane sealed an important win.

Here are three talking points from the game.

Ruben Rodrigues

Not for the first time this season, Rodrigues put in yet another impressive display.

He took both goals well. First, Cameron Brannagan pinged a long-range pass to Stanley Mills and the Everton loanee found the run of Rodrigues, who cut inside and bent it in.

The second was also decent, with the ball falling to him on the edge of the box before switching his feet and bending it in the top corner.

He also kept his composure when in recent weeks he had lost his head at times. The midfielder remained level-headed and in control in all aspects of his game.

Chances on Goal

In recent matches, the U’s have struggled in front of goal. In fact, they have just one goal in four league games before this fixture.

Not only did Oxford take their chances, but they also created plenty. There were 28 attempts on goal with an impressive 14 of those on target.

Rodrigues, Mark Harris, Brannagan, Mills and Josh Murphy all had attempts on goal. Brannagan struck the woodwork and Oxford also saw an attempt cleared off the line before a goal-mouth scramble. Even substitute James Henry saw two attempts on target late on.

It could have been a lot more than the three goals but for an inspired display from former U’s goalkeeper Max Crocombe between the sticks.

Wingers

For the first time under Buckingham, the wingers were a constant threat and offered something slightly different. Instead of coming inside, Mills and Murphy often tried to beat their man on the outside and the Brewers’ defence were unable to cope.

Of course, they did cut inside on a few occasions but the pair hugged the touchline as opposed to playing central.

When Tyler Goodrham replaced Murphy, he also attempted that direct style but cut inside more than his teammate.
