Oxford United striker Matty Taylor has won the League One Player of the Month for February.

The on-loan Bristol City frontman netted seven goals in six games which helped retain the U’s promotion push, which included five league wins from eight games.

However, the 29-year-old said the only reason he was able to receive the award was down to the contributions from the rest of the squad, with James Henry particularly highlighted.

He told the Oxford Mail: “He could easily be sat here to be honest, as could a number of others. It’s obviously nice to be nominated and win awards.

“It just shows you that us as a team are doing something right. The boys have been supplying me and I’ve managed to put a few in, but it’s more of a team award.”

The striker has been in devastating form and has now taken his goal tally to 17 for the season in all competitions.

However, it wasn’t a player and manager double after U’s boss Karl Robinson lost out to Coventry City boss, Mark Robins.

It’s the fourth time this season that Robinson has been shortlisted yet failed to bring home the award, but the U’s boss said: “It doesn’t bother me one bit, which is a good job.”

When asked about Taylor, he added: “I’m made up for him. It’s a tremendous achievement by him and the players to assist his goals.”

Taylor is the first Oxford player to win a monthly award since Ryan Clarke in January 2014 while the wait for a manager to win goes on, with Ramon Diaz the last U’s boss to win the honour back in January 2005.
