Oxford United extended their unbeaten league run to eight games with a narrow win over struggling Doncaster.

The U’s took the lead through Mark Sykes but, despite their dominance, allowed the hosts to equalise in the second half. However, substitute James Henry netted a late winner for the U’s.

Here are three talking points from the game.

Tale of Two Halves

Like at Sunderland, Oxford’s match at Doncaster was a tale of two halves. The U’s dominated the opening 45 minutes and deserved to head into the break with the lead. However, the game should have been dead and buried with the visitors dominating possession and creating several chances.

After the break, Doncaster got themselves back into the game and netted an equaliser, which came against the run of play. Oxford struggled but eventually found a deserved winner through Henry.

Doncaster Goal Helped the U’s

With the evening looking like one of frustration, Doncaster’s goal actually helped the U’s. Oxford were struggling to make their dominance count but the equalising goal spurred the visitors on to secure a deserved win.

The U’s had several good opportunities to add to their lead in the first half and even had a couple of goals chalked off for offside. The equaliser gave Oxford a much-needed push to finish the game off.

Gavin Whyte

It was another match in which Gavin Whyte failed to find the back of the net but in recent matches, he has shown glimpses of why the U’s brought him back.

Against Sunderland, he looked like his old self down the right-hand side but against Donny, the winger missed a couple of decent opportunities to score, including a one on one with the goalkeeper in which he raced in behind the defence only to be denied.

Once he opens his U’s account, he should regain some confidence and will hopefully go on to score a few more.
