Two Free Agents Oxford United Could Sign to Solve Their Left-Sided Dilemma

|

It was made clear during pre-season that Oxford United are in desperate need for another left-sided player. Now, following the recent injury to the clubs only recognised left-back in Josh Ruffels, that transfer looks all the more important.

Naturally, the salary cap will have a major say in who Karl Robinson is able to bring in, and it remains unclear what the remaining funds look like. However, here are two free agents that would be a top addition for the U’s.

Luke Garbutt

The former Everton man needs no introduction. The 27-year-old spent the 2018/19 season on loan with the U’s, where he scored four times from 36 appearances in all competitions.

Although Robinson was hopeful on bringing the left-back back to the Kassam last summer, the Englishman opted for a move to League One rivals Ipswich Town instead.

During his season at Portman Road, Garbutt scored six times from 30 outings, but the Tractor Boys haven’t brought him back in for a second season.

Following his recent release from Everton after 11 years with the club, the defender, who can also play on the left-hand side of midfield, would provide competition for both Ruffels and winger Joel Cooper, on top of adding some extra quality to the squad.

The one concern would be his wages. According to salarysport.com, the 27-year-old was earning a staggering £28,000 per week while on the books with the Toffees. As a free agent, and due to the salary cap, the defender would need to take a significant pay cut if he wants to secure regular first-team football at Oxford United.

Jordan Obita

Another option is former Reading defender, Jordan Obita. Born in Oxford, Obita came through the ranks in Berkshire and had been with the club for 19 years before his release in the summer.

The 26-year-old had loan spells with Barnet, Gillingham, Portsmouth and Oldham Athletic before establishing himself in the Royals’ side.

During his time at Reading, the left-back, who can also play on the right as well as the left-hand side of midfield, made just shy of 200 appearances, where he scored seven times. He was also part of the Royals side that won promotion from the Championship in 2011/12.

Again, wages are an issue but nowhere near as high as what Garbutt was earning. According to salarysport.com, Obita was earning £12,000 per week during his time in the Championship.

Although both players should be able to secure a position in a Championship club, the appeal of regular first-team football at a club looking to secure promotion could be a decisive factor. For Garbutt, he has experience with the club, while for Obita, it would be the opportunity to play for his hometown team.
