U’s Boss Looking to Bring Young Defender to the Club

Oxford United manager Karl Robinson is looking to bring in a new centre back who the club can send back out on loan.

With defensive duo Rob Atkinson and Elliott Moore forming a solid unit, the U’s boss doesn’t want to unsettle the duo. However, with the injury to John Mousinho, the club need to bring in reinforcements.

It worked last season when Moore was partnered with Rob Dickie in defence and the U’s signed Atkinson from Eastleigh before loaning the 22-year-old back to the Spitfires.

Speaking to the Five Minutes Fans Forum on BBC Radio Oxford, Robinson said: “We know we have initial cover, so you might want to bring in someone you can put out on loan in the National League with a 24-hour recall.

“At least that person’s playing and they’re in a bit of a rhythm.

“There are one or two bits of business we also want to get done in this window if we can, but those are things that we’ll keep internal.”

Another area of the pitch the U’s boss is looking for cover is on the wings. Oxford had been linked with former winger Gavin Whyte, but the Northern Ireland international has joined League One rivals Hull City instead.

Robinson added: “We know one of our biggest attributes is how high we press teams.

“The freshness we can keep in that area of the pitch will be really key towards the end of the season.

“It’s been a fundamental factor here for the last few years.”
