Oxford United are “closing in” on naming Grant McCann as their new manager, according to Alan Nixon.

The 42-year-old, who left Peterborough in January, has stood out against the other candidates for the job.

Nixon also confirms that the club could make the announcement before this weekend’s match at home against Derby.

McCann has enjoyed some success as a manager, most notably gaining promotion from League One as champions with Hull City before establishing them in the second tier.

He also built a very strong Doncaster side who were knocked out of the playoffs by eventual winners, Charlton.

After leaving Hull, he returned to Peterborough but was unable to stop relegation from the Championship, but was dismissed with the club just outside the playoffs earlier this season.

Oxford are without a win in ten – losing nine – so they not only need a manager who can come in and help them stay in the division but also one who has experience to gain promotion to the Championship and play an exciting brand of football – he ticks both boxes.
