Oxford United have re-established their pursuit of Scotland defender Stephen O’Donnell, as reported by The Daily Record.

The 28-year-old was subject to a move in January, but despite a £200,000 bid being accepted by Kilmarnock, the full-back turned down a move.

Now though, having seen his Killy contract expire, the defender is a free agent and could head south with the U’s still interested.

The former Partick Thistle and Luton Town defender has racked up well over 300 appearances and has been capped by Scotland 11 times.

He was a key figure for the SPL side, where he made 122 appearances. He added three goals and provided three assists from 28 Scottish Premiership games last season.

But in May, the Scotland international rejected a new deal with the side. Speaking to the Scottish newspaper, O’Donnell said: “I would love to have a crack at the Championship down in England.

“I had an opportunity to go down to League One in January, but I just didn’t feel the timing was right. But if I feel the opportunity is the right one down there I would go there as well.

“I am leaving all my options open, I just want to make sure it’s the right move for me professionally and personally.”
