Oxford United have announced Matty Taylor as their second summer signing. He follows Joel Cooper who joined the U’s last week.

The 30-year-old enjoyed a fruitful spell on loan from Bristol City last season, scoring 17 goals in all competitions, but the striker was released by the Robins at the end of the season. As a result, the U’s have snapped up the Oxford-born forward on a three-year deal.

Speaking to the clubs’ official website, Taylor said: “I couldn’t be happier. It’s my local club, the players and staff here are fantastic and the fans have been amazing.

“It’s a big move for me but I know it’s the right one and I can’t wait to get started again. What happened in the play-offs hurt us but we have to use that as fuel and motivation to go even better next time.”

U’s boss Karl Robinson was equally delighted to land his star forward. He said: “In a normal season he’s a 20 goal striker and every team is looking for that.

“I want to thank the Board for backing us and Matty for buying into what we are doing here. He has agreed to drop a division and financially I am sure there were other options out there but he wants to play for Oxford United and be part of what we are building.

“Strangely we think there is more to come from him as a player but the fans know what he is all about and I am sure will be thrilled that he is now our player permanently.”

Born in Kidlington, Taylor began his career with the U’s but only managed seven substitute appearances before being released.

He spent time in non-league with Oxfordshire clubs before joining Forest Green Rovers, where he would score 24 goals in 106 appearances over three years.

But he made his name at Bristol Rovers. The striker netted 68 times from 134 appearances and helped fire the Gas to back to back promotions from the Conference to League One.

However, rivals Bristol City triggered a release clause in the strikers’ contract and he joined the Robins in the Championship. But, Taylor struggled for game time, managing 75 appearances across four seasons.

He rediscovered his form and fitness while on loan for Oxford this season, where he netted 17 goals in all competitions.
