Oxford United are set to battle it out with Sunderland for Ipswich Town winger, Gwion Edwards, the Football Insider has reported.

The 27-year-old, who joined the Tractor Boys in 2018, recently exercised the one-year option in the deal that saw him arrive from Peterborough United.

As a result, the winger, who has scored eight times from 69 appearances during his time in Suffolk, is under contract until next summer.

Like Ipswich, Sunderland will be facing another year in League One and will need to recruit in order to mount a promotion charge. Oxford, however, are in the playoffs and may be better suited if they secure promotion to the Championship.

Last season, Edwards made 33 appearances for Ipswich in the second tier, scoring six times. Obviously, with the likes of Marcus Browne, Ben Woodburn and Nathan Holland having played a part on loan this season, the Welshman could be a welcome permanent addition.
