Newcastle United midfielder Matty Longstaff is a larget for Oxford United, according to Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke.

While a loan move for the 21-year-old may seem ambitious, the midfielder is out of favour at St. James’ Park and recently ended an uneventful loan spell at Aberdeen. During his time in Scotland, Longstaff managed just five appearances in the Scottish Premiership.

Now, it is believed that the Magpies are happy to send him down to League One with the U’s one of several clubs interested.

Last summer, Championship clubs Nottingham Forest, Sheffield United, Blackburn Rovers and Huddersfield Town all showed interest in the midfielder but moved to Scotland instead.

The U’s may need to add depth to the central midfield role with Cameron Brannagan and Mark Sykes both linked with moves away in recent weeks. Even if the duo remain at the club, Longstaff could still fill in the defensive midfield role in the season-long absence of Alex Rodriguez Gorrin.
