Was it a Red Card for Beano?

Saturday saw Oxford United take three points from their travels to Wimbledon.

But the win was tarnished with a Red card to James Constable after Wimbledon defender Will Antwi rolled about the floor indicating he had been elbowed by Beano.

I must admit sitting behind the goal I did not see Beano raise his arms while jumping for the ball. I have looked at pictures produced in the Oxford Mail and watched replays of the incident.

My conclusion is that I feel the referee got the decision wrong. After the referee produced the red card OUFC fans, players and officials were outraged at the decision which was not helped when Will Antwi smiled as if to indicate he had played a part in the dismiss of the Oxford number 9.

Earlier in the match the same players had clashed with Antwi being given a yellow card. This was for a push on James Constable when both were running towards the ball. The resulting push saw James Constable crash into the advertising hoardings.

Chris Wilder Oxfoord United’s manager said in an interview afterwards that he feels the referee was duped by the players antics. An appeal is likely to go into the FA to try and overturn the decision. As it stands Beano would miss 4 matches.
