With the start of the world cup tonight the host nation Brazil are taking on Croatia I`d just like to point out a few facts.

We know the Brazilians play in yellow just like our U`s from Oxford. Tune in tonight as you might hear the fans of Brazil chanting “It`s just like watching Oxford!!”

Well may be not.

Oxford has had five former players who played in pervious world cups.

In 1982 in Spain Billy Hamilton represented the Republic of Ireland.

Then in Italy in 1990 Ray Houghton played for the Republic of Ireland and Mark Wright represented England.

In the USA world cup in 1994 playing for the Republic of Ireland were Ray Houghton and John Aldridge.

Our last representative was at the South Korea & Japan world cup in 2002. Andre Arendse was part of the South African squad.

However although he never played for Oxford but was born in the shire we do have a link to Brazil 2014 in football pundit Martin Keown who was part of England`s world cup squad in France 1998 and again in 2002 South Korea & Japan.

So all U`s fans lets live the dream and support the yellows tonight hoping that some of that flair will rub off onto our boys next season.

Not forgetting the big match on Saturday evening let`s get behind the 3 lions in their bid to do the nation proud.
