500 Games In Management – A Pick Of The Best At Oxford

|

Oxford United manager Karl Robinson completed 500 games in club management on Saturday as the U’s eased past Tranmere Rovers.

346 of those were at Milton Keynes Dons, where he achieved promotion to the Championship during a six year spell.

Robinson then managed Charlton Athletic for 74 games before leaving to join Oxford where he has been at the helm for 80 matches.

Despite having his lowest win percentage of any club at the U’s, Robinson has had some important results, and here are a few whilst in charge at the Kassam Stadium.

14/04/18 – Oxford United 2-0 Southend United

After a run of bad results, which included a 7-0 home defeat against Wigan Athletic and a 2-1 loss to bottom club Bury, Pep Clotet was relieved of his role as Oxford manager.

But, it took almost two months for the U’s, who underwent a takeover during that time, to appoint their new manager.

Under Derek Fazackerley as caretaker, the club dropped from 10th to 15th in League One and recorded only one win – a dramatic 3-2 victory over Robinson’s Charlton Athletic at the Valley.

Robinson failed to win any of his opening five league games, including defeats at Portsmouth and Shrewsbury, before losing at home to Fleetwood.

But, following a 2-0 win over Southend United thanks to goals from James Henry and Ricardinho, Robinson guided the club to a further two wins from four to keep them secure.

Not only was it a catalyst for a positive run of results, but it was also a first win over the Shrimps in nine league games.

13/10/18 Oxford United 2-0 Plymouth Argyle

After a disastrous start to the new season, which included just one win from their opening thirteen League One matches, a home win over Plymouth boosted the squad and provided a decent run of results.

Goals from Jamie Mackie and Curtis Nelson, both former Argyle players, saw the U’s overtake their relegation rivals.

The U’s lost just once lost in their next ten league games, a run of form that would lift them from the bottom four.

But when that defeat came, inevitably against Southend United, the U’s went four league games without a win, including three defeats, and were knocked out of the FA Cup.

A win over league leaders Portsmouth with goals from Cameron Brannagan and Henry gave the U’s some needed confidence and, although they wouldn’t win for another five games, Robinson’s side picked up crucial points against Barnsley and Sunderland.

23/02/19 Blackpool 0-1 Oxford United

After that run of five games without a win, the U’s found themselves back in a relegation battle, but a Jordan Graham free-kick at Blackpool started a sensational run which saw the U’s clear themselves from danger and establish a mid-table finish.

Robinson’s side lost just once in twelve league games, including Easter wins at home to Charlton Athletic and away to Shrewsbury Town, before ending the season with defeat at champions, Luton Town, securing a 12th placed finish.

14/09/19 Oxford United 3-0 Tranmere Rovers

Robinson’s 500th game in management was also a crucial win for Oxford. The U’s made a bright start to this season, picking up a point at Sunderland before beating Peterborough United at home. But a run of four defeats in five saw the U’s early league progress come to a standstill.

The win over Tranmere, although as expected, was an important result, and Oxford fans will be hoping it can spring a run if positive results in the league.

The U’s travel to Bolton tonight, looking to make it back to back league wins for the first time this season.
