Oxford United midfielder Cameron Brannagan has emerged as a potential transfer target for Blackburn Rovers, according to Rich Sharpe of the Lancashire Telegraph.

The 26-year-old has been a standout performer for the U’s since his arrival in January 2018 and is closing in on 200 appearances for the club.

However, having failed to secure promotion to the second tier in the last three seasons, interest remains high and Rovers, along with QPR, are monitoring the situation, according to Sharpe.

The midfielder is out of contract in the summer and the club will need to make a decision whether to cash in now or potentially allow him to depart for free when his current deal runs out.

Of course, this isn’t the first time that Brannagan has been linked with a Championship club. Last season, Blackpool saw several bids rejected by Oxford, while several other second-tier clubs showed interest.

Last season, the midfielder netted a career-high 14 goals and laid on a further three assists from 41 League One appearances.
