“We’ve turned down a lot of offers for Gavin and people know where we stand. We know people like him. I love a lot of players too – but I don’t get them all.”

Another rumour the U’s boss dismissed was that of his goalkeeper returning to Blackburn.

The Championship side said they wanted both Walton and Eastwood, having signed the former yesterday.

Robinson, who spoke with Rovers, insisted they won’t make an offer for the 30-year-old.

Meanwhile, the U’s boss heads to Belgium today to watch a target, but after Browne was spotted in the stadium last night, supporters are questioning why?

Robinson admitted he’d like to keep the 21-year-old at the Kassam following a successful loan spell last season and hasn’t ruled out a return.

He said: “I’d love him, there’s no getting away from the fact that if he’s available, we’ll pay money for him.

“The chairman has openly said to me ‘whatever it costs, we’ll buy him’. But if Marcus Browne was available, we won’t be the only club in for him.

“I think he really felt at home here and I think the fans have a big influence on what he wants to do.”

It’s been a frustrating summer for U’s fans. Having lost Curtis Nelson and the departure of five first-team loanees, Robinson needed to introduce some new faces.

The club finally announced the signing of Chris Cadden yesterday, eventually signing on a season-long loan from MLS side Columbus Crew, but the Scottish international is only the third new signing after Alex Gorrin and Tariqe Fosu.

Not only is Robinson desperate for a striker and a central defender, but he also can’t afford to lose any more players, particularly Eastwood. If Whyte did leave, you’d expect for the fee to be around Robinson’s price tag, and as a result, they could invest that money in the squad.

But, time is running out and the U’s haven’t got long to find replacements.
