Oxford began the month with progression in the FA Cup. A Billy Bodin brace helped Oxford edge past National League strugglers Maidenhead at Grenoble Road. The U’s will play Grimsby at home in the second round.

However, the club were then dealt a massive blow when news emerged that Liam Manning was set to join Bristol City. Less than 24 hours later, the 38-year-old made the switch to the Championship club, leaving the board to find a second manager in 2023.

On the pitch, Oxford continued their winning run despite the departure of Manning with a 3-2 win at Leyton Orient. A Ruben Rodrigues brace and assist put the U’s three goals up but the hosts netted twice shortly after the restart to set up a tense finale in the capital.

With no upcoming fixture due to the international break, reports began to circulate regarding the club’s new manager. Firstly, Notts County manager Luke Williams was in “advanced talks” over taking the role.

Des Buckingham was the next to be linked with reports claiming the club were “set to appoint” the Oxford-born head coach. Fans didn’t have to wait long as the 38-year-old was confirmed later that day.

Oxford’s first game under Buckingham ended in defeat on the road at strugglers Cheltenham. Both teams ended the game with ten men but the Robins scored in each half to secure the points.

Buckingham then took charge at Grenoble Road for the first time and his side played out a goalless draw against league leaders, Bolton.

Oxford ended the month with the arrival of Joe Bennett on a short-term deal. The 33-year-old left back will provide cover for Greg Leigh, who is currently out injured.
