Oxford United are showing interest in Brighton & Hove Albion defender Haydon Roberts, according to The Athletic’s Andy Naylor.

However, the report suggests that the U’s will battle with League One promotion rivals MK Dons for the signature of the central defender.

The 19-year-old, who was on loan at Rochdale last season, has made the Seagulls’ matchday squad on 12 occasions but is yet to feature for Graham Potter’s side in the Premier League.

He has, however, turned out six times for the club with three coming this season, all of which have been in the Carabao Cup. The defender has also represented England at both U17 and U18 levels, making 19 appearances.

The Premier League club will not block a loan move despite allowing Dan Burn to join Newcastle United. He could become Oxford’s first addition of the January transfer window.

The U’s are looking for a central defender following the departure of loanee Jordan Thorniley to parent club Blackpool last week. The 19-year-old can also cover at left-back.
