Oxford United have been dealt a potential transfer blow with Hull Live claiming midfielder Xavier Simons will remain at the club for the rest of the season.

Recent reports suggested that the 19-year-old was set to follow fellow Chelsea loanees Nathan Baxter and Harvey Vale back to Stamford Bridge this winter, but Tigers boss Liam Rosenior wants the England youth international to remain at the club and has opened talks about a potential long-term deal.

Speaking to Hull Live, Rosenior said: “With Xavi, I love the kid, I think he’s got a great future in the game, and he’s someone I enjoy working with, and want to work with in the long term.”

Oxford were one of several clubs interested in the Chelsea man after he managed just two appearances for the Championship club this season.

The U’s have three solid central midfielders in Cameron Brannagan, Lewis Bate and Cameron Brannagan but you could argue it’s an area of the pitch they are lacking in depth, particularly with Alex Gorrin being ruled out through injury.
