Oxford United have completed the signing of Dungannon Swifts midfielder Oisin Smyth. The 21-year-old has penned a three-and-a-half-year deal.

The youngster, who has represented Northern Ireland at U21 level on seven occasions, becomes Karl Robinson’s second signing of the January transfer window after the U’s added Marcus Browne on a permanent deal.

Oxford, who beat Glentoran and Wrexham to signing the midfielder, had been monitoring Smyth for a while and he becomes the fifth player to join the club from the other side of the Irish Sea, after Gavin Whyte, Mark Sykes, Joel Cooper and Luke McNally.

The 21-year-old had scored once and added five assists from 21 NIFL Premiership games this season.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Robinson said: “He’s very much one for the future.

“He is still very raw and will have to make the adjustment to full time football but he’s a very impressive young man who clearly wants to come here, learn, and make his mark.

“He’s a good footballer and we look forward to working with him and seeing him develop.”

Smyth added: “It’s a fantastic opportunity for me and I’m really looking forward to it. I’ve been really impressed with the facilities here and it’s definitely a club on the up.

“There are a lot of really good players here and I can’t wait to get out there on the training pitches, work as hard as I can, and make the most of my chance here.”
