Oxford to Face Portsmouth in League One Playoffs

|

Oxford United will face Portsmouth in the League One play-off semi-final after clubs in the division backed the option to curtail the remaining games.

The club was hoping to fulfil all remaining fixtures but an overwhelming number of votes across all three divisions of the Football League opted this was the best option.

As a result of an unweighted points per game (PPG) system, the U’s finish fourth in League One – their highest league finish since 1998/99.

Oxford manager Karl Robinson told the clubs official website: “We have never wavered in our belief that the season needed to end on the pitch and now we get a chance to finish all the hard work that we started back in July.

“Whatever happens we have had a season none of us is ever going to forget: there have been some amazing wins, two cup runs and to think that we finished the regular season with the drama of that win at Shrewsbury sums up the way our whole season has gone.

“We’ve trained well over the last couple of days and now we have clarity on the way ahead of us and can take training to the next level as we prepare to play again.”

Oxford have only played Portsmouth once this season with the home fixture cancelled as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. Matty Taylor scored a 90th-minute equaliser at Fratton Park as the U’s drew 1-1.

The U’s are unbeaten against Portsmouth in their last three meetings, but the south coast club won the previous two. In the last ten meetings, there have been four draws with Oxford and Pompey both securing three wins.
