Sam Long was the standout player at Oxford United’s end of season awards evening after picking up two prizes.

The 26-year-old was voted as the winner of both the Andrew Knapton Supporters’ Player of the Year and the Players’ Player of the Year. Long received 49 per cent of the fans’ vote, ahead of Jack Stevens and Elliott Moore.

The defender has turned out 44 times this season, scoring six goals and adding a further four assists.

Although he is an injury doubt for the upcoming playoff games against Blackpool, the Oxford-born defender was delighted to pick up the awards.

He said: “I am very surprised and very humbled to win the two awards.

“It means a lot. I have been at the club since I was a boy and I know there are some amazing players who have won these awards.

“I want to thank the fans for voting and I want to thank the players as well because that is an incredible feeling to win that award when there are so many talented players in this squad.”

Meanwhile, goalkeeper Jack Stevens was awarded as the Young Player of the Year. The 23-year-old has made 33 appearances since replacing Simon Eastwood at the beginning of December and has kept an impressive 13 clean sheets.

He said: “It’s my first season in the first team and it’s a great feeling to win this award.

“Defensively we have all played our part and it has been amazing to be part of a season which now goes into the playoffs.”

Elsewhere, Matty Taylor took home the Golden Boot for the second successive campaign with his tally of 18 goals in all competitions.

The striker was also shortlisted for the goal of the season for his strike at Accrington, but Brandon Barker’s solo effort in the 6-0 win over Crewe clinched the prize, ahead of efforts from Long at Plymouth, Mide Shodipo at Burton and James Henry at Rochdale.

The Women’s Player of the Year was awarded to defender Lauren Haynes. The 25-year-old has had another impressive campaign and she dedicated her award to the late Micky Lewis.
