September Round-Up: Inconsistency on the Pitch but Finally Some Clarity off It

The month began with deadline day, but it was all quiet at Oxford United. Despite Jodi Jones and Oisin Smyth being made available for a loan move away, the duo stayed put. However, the U’s did make one signing with the arrival of Lazio right back Djavan Anderson on a one-year deal.

Young midfielder Josh Johnson then signed his first professional contract. The 17-year-old, who has made five senior appearances for the U’s, has penned a two-year deal with the club and follows Gatlin O’Donkor and Slavi Spasov in committing their future.

The U’s made it back-to-back league wins with a 2-1 victory over Burton Albion. Second half goals from Cameron Brannagan and Kyle Joseph put Oxford in control, despite a late strike from the Brewers testing the nerves.

With Oxford’s match at Shrewsbury postponed following the death of the Queen, the U’s would return to action on a Tuesday night in Plymouth. However, Oxford bowed down to a 1-0 defeat in Devon.

The U’s then suffered another defeat with a 2-1 loss at home against MK Dons. John Mousinho scored an own goal before Simon Eastwood conceded a penalty, which was scored by Will Grigg. Mousinho did reduce the deficit late on but it wasn’t enough.

Off the field, Chris Short has returned to the club for a second spell in the sports science department. The 52-year-old returns to Grenoble Road on a short term basis.

Finally, the news we have all been waiting for – the club has new ownership in the form of Indonesian investors Anindya Bakrie and Erick Thohir taking a 51 per cent share in the club. Recently appointed director Grant Ferguson has been made the new chairman with Sumrith ‘Tiger’ Thanakarnjanasuth remaining a minority investor.
