Oxford United returned to action after the international break with defeat at promotion rivals Plymouth.

Joe Edwards scored for the Pilgrims with their only shot on target in what was an even game for both teams.

The result, coupled with a last-minute goal for Sunderland, means Oxford have dropped out of the playoffs to seventh.

Here are three talking points from the game.

Cameron Brannagan

There was a notable absentee from the starting line-up with Cameron Brannagan missing after picking up a head injury in training.

The combative midfielder was replaced by Marcus McGuane who, unlike Brannagan, was unable to get much control of the ball during the match.

Alongside him, Herbie Kane remained a threat but with the U’s deadly duo not together, there was clearly something missing in the middle of the park.

Wrong Decisions

Oxford were awarded a penalty ten minutes before the break but the decision was reversed as the lineman ruled Gavin Whyte offside. However, the Northern Ireland international was easily onside and if the penalty would have stood, there was a good chance that the Plymouth man could have been sent off.

Later on in the game, Matty Taylor was handed a yellow card as he threw himself at a deep cross from James Henry with the referee suspecting he handled the ball.

Two Halves

Despite being up against a fellow promotion rival, Oxford began the game strongly. Whyte was denied by an excellent save from the Plymouth goalkeeper and the wrong decision for a penalty highlighted how threatening the U’s looked.

However, after the restart, Plymouth grew into the game but their goal didn’t necessarily come while they were on top. Despite that, it was a well-taken strike.

Oxford struggled to create chances after the break and once the hosts took the lead, the result was never in doubt.
