Oxford United are one of four teams that are ‘in a race’ to sign Morecambe striker Cole Stockton, according to Football Insider.

League One rivals Rotherham, along with Championship clubs Preston and Barnsley, are also said to be chasing the 27-year-old.

The striker netted his 20th goal of the season in Morecambe’s 3-2 win over Wycombe on Saturday and it is his impressive tally that has attracted the interest of several clubs. He has scored 52 times in 148 appearances for the Lancashire club.

The forward has 18 months left on his current deal so it may prompt the Shrimps to sell now before his contract begins to run down.

Stockton netted an equaliser against the U’s when the sides met in October, although Oxford won the match 3-1, and has two goals from three appearances against Karl Robinson’s side.

Matty Taylor is Oxford’s top scorer with 14 goals in all competitions this season but fellow forwards Dan Agyei and Sam Winnall have been out of favour, despite the latter netting the winner against Sheffield Wednesday.

The U’s have also been linked with former England striker, Jermain Defoe.
