Oxford United have identified Cheltenham Town defender Will Boyle as a possible replacement for Rob Atkinson, according to Alan Nixon.

Atkinson joined Bristol City yesterday in a deal that could be worth around £2 million, leaving the U’s with some funds to spend on a potential replacement.

According to Nixon, left-back Jamie Robson is still a target while Boyle has also been added to Karl Robinson’s list. However, the 25-year-old has previously been of interest to Rotherham United, Sheffield Wednesday, Preston North End and Fleetwood Town, according to a report by Football Insider.

The centre back came through the ranks at Huddersfield Town but managed just two senior appearances before joining Cheltenham in 2017 following several loan spells away from the John Smith’s Stadium.

Boyle turned out 29 times in League Two last season, scoring six goals, and has found the net 22 times from 163 appearances.

On top of securing promotion to League One with the Robins, Boyle was also named in the PFA League Two Team of the Season.
