Oxford United have bolstered their defensive options with the addition of Cardiff City centre-back Ciaron Brown.

The 24-year-old is out of contract in the summer but has joined the U’s on a loan deal until the end of the season.

At Cardiff, the defender was brought into the first-team fray by former manager Mick McCarthy but had failed to establish himself under new head coach Steve Morison.

Now, the twice capped Northern Ireland international has dropped down a division for regular football with the U’s, having made just 19 Bluebirds outings since arriving from non-league Wealdstone in 2018.

Speaking to the club’s official website, manager Karl Robinson said: “He fits the bill nicely for us. He is tall, powerful reads the game well and he can play in a couple of positions.

“With Luke McNally doing well alongside Elliott Moore, Sam Long also able to play there and John Mousinho also available we think we are well covered in that position now and Ciaron will also give us that extra option at left-back if needed.”

Brown added: “I’m looking forward to it. Oxford are doing really well in the league and I spoke to Gavin Whyte and to Curtis Nelson and they had nothing but good things to say about the club and the fans so I am really excited to be part of that.”

Oxford had been in the market for a central defender after Jordan Thorniley was recalled from his loan spell by Blackpool.
