Oxford Face Second Friendly in as Many Days

Oxford United will continue their preparations for the League One play-off semi-final with a second friendly match in as many days.

The U’s were narrowly beaten 2-1 by a strong Reading side yesterday afternoon, which included a Simon Eastwood penalty save and a Ben Woodburn strike.

But, much like pre-season under Karl Robinson, the games are coming thick and fast as they face another Championship opponent.

As for Woodburn, it is almost nine months since the on-loan Liverpool man last played after suffering a broken bone on his foot, but Robinson was delighted with his performance.

He told the Oxford Mail: “It was a great goal. He hit a volley as well which the keeper made a great save from, so he looked bright and sharp.

“There’s aspects of his game that are still way off the Ben Woodburn that I know, but nothing in my mind has been picked yet, there’s still a lot of work to be done.

“He will see this as an opportunity to be on a level playing field as everyone else, whereas he would have been way behind everybody before.”

Meanwhile, top scorer Matty Taylor was one of three players rested for the trip to Reading. Liam Kelly and Malachi Napa were also sidelined, but Robinson said there was nothing to worry about.

He said: “We’ve got no concerns over them, but it’s not worth risking them. If there was a (competitive) game now they’d all be available.”
