Oxford United are looking to sign defender Jordan Thorniley following his release from Blackpool, confirms BBC Radio Oxford.

The 26-year-old previously joined the U’s on a season-long loan before being recalled by the Seasiders in January. Now, the defender is available on a free transfer.

Thorniley played 30 times in the Championship this season, where he scored once and added one assist, as the club suffered relegation back to the third tier.

He turned out 25 times during his previous loan spell with the U’s, where he contributed one assist.

Fans were devastated when he was recalled, which shows how much of an important figure he was. Not only could he play comfortably in the middle of defence but the versatile defender could also play at left-back, similar to Ciaron Brown.

This would give Liam Manning better depth in those two areas, particularly at left-back – something the club have been short on for several years.

It also provides Manning with three or four solid centre-backs should he opt for a back three, meaning new wing-backs would be required.
