Preview: League One – Oxford United vs Swindon Town

|

Oxford United welcome fierce rivals Swindon Town to Grenoble Road on Saturday fresh off the back of a 3-2 win over MK Dons.

The U’s haven’t faced the Robins since 2017, but have major bragging rights over their near neighbours. Oxford have won seven of the last eight meetings between the two sides, with the other fixture ending in a goalless draw in the reformatted Football League Trophy.

As a result, the U’s are unbeaten in 18 years and will be looking to extend that run this weekend.

Karl Robinson’s side saw off MK Dons in the week which was just their second win of the new campaign. Swindon lost 2-1 at Northampton on Tuesday night, leaving them level on points with the U’s on six points, but have played one game more.

Matty Taylor netted his third goal of the season against the Dons, while deadline day signing Mide Shodipo scored his first senior goal on his U’s debut.

Tyler Smith netted from the spot for the Robins against the Cobblers and is the visitors top scorer with four goals. Jonny Smith has two, while summer signing Brett Pitman has one.

Swindon started the season with home wins over Rochdale and Burton but lost on the road to Blackpool and Peterborough. Since the defeat against the Posh, Richie Wellens’ side have lost a further three games.

Rob Atkinson is an injury doubt for the U’s after suffering an injury against the Dons, but there could be a return for Cameron Brannagan and John Mousinho. Joel Cooper scored twice in an U21 game on Tuesday as he looks to establish himself in the first team.

Predicted line-up: Simon Eastwood, Josh Ruffels, Elliott Moore, Sam Long, Sean Clare, Alex Rodriguez Gorrin, Cameron Brannagan, Mark Sykes, Joel Cooper, James Henry, Matty Taylor.

Prediction: Oxford United 4-1 Swindon Town.
