Robinson To Discuss Transfer Dealings With Chairman

|

Oxford United boss, Karl Robinson, will meet with chairman, Sunrith Thanakarnjanasuth, this Saturday after the U’s first pre-season friendly at Rangers.

The pair will discuss transfer proceedings and finances amongst other things.

Despite Robinson saying he wanted to make early strides in the transfer market, the U’s have only made two senior signings in the shape of Alex Gorrin and Tariqe Fosu.

But they have invested in the academy side, with Kevin Berkoe, Sam Allardyce and Yoav Sade all joining the Under 23 squad, whist Scott Shearer has joined as a goalkeeping coach.

Fans may be concerned about the lack of signings, and rightly so when Jamie Mackie is the U’s only senior natural striker, but Robinson isn’t worried.

He told the Oxford Mail: “There will be eight of us in the meeting and we will go through where we’re at, where our finances sit and what we have available.

“So we will get clarity on where we’re at to really attack the last weeks in the window.”

Robinson is looking at other targets, but admitted that any investments must be right for the club.

He added: “There’s a calmness to it all that I think is important. I’ve probably got more clarity (in general) now than I’ve ever had, because the board have been very clear.

“It’s so important that you’ve got transparency and I’ve never had so much honesty about where we’re exactly at. That’s a tremendous place to be.

The U’s boss believes that the club will benefit from the investment, rather than putting in place “short-term fixes.”

He also mentioned the fans, saying; “some fans will read this and think ‘what a load of rubbish, we want to win’. Some fans will read this and go ‘that’s brilliant, he really cares’.

But he finished by saying that the club needs longevity, adding the club must be treated right today to benefit it in the future.

It is a concern at the lack of transfer activity this summer, particularly when the U’s have been linked with various targets.

The two senior acquisitions made look like they’ll benefit the side, but the squad is still lacking in key areas.

Following the departure of Curtis Nelson, the U’s are desperate for a solid centre back. Youngster, Nico Jones, may have to step up before he’s ready if Robinson fails to find a replacement.

The other area is that of a striker. Mackie, at the age of 33, won’t feature in every game this season, and despite some youthful players among the ranks, the squad lacks depth in a natural striker.

But Robinson is blessed with talent across the midfield. Fosu can play wide as well as centrally, whilst Gorrin can sit in midfield and hold, drifting wide of needed.

Then there are the likes of Gavin Whyte, James Henry, Rob Hall, Shandon Baptiste and Mark Sykes, all of which are looking for an impressive campaign.
