Preview: League One – Gillingham vs Oxford United

|

Oxford United travel to Gillingham this weekend as the U’s look to pick up some much-needed points in the league.

Their previous League One encounter at home to Crewe Alexandra was postponed just 35 minutes before kick-off when a member of the visiting squad tested positive for coronavirus.

Karl Robinson’s side were in action during the week as a largely rotated side edged past Bristol Rovers on penalties after the game ended 1-1.

But focus returns to league action, and it’s been two weeks since they were last involved, winning 4-1 at Accrington.

Rob Atkinson took a knock during the win against Rovers and looks likely to miss the game. Jamie Hanson returned from injury against the Gas, while there could also be returns for Alex Rodriguez Gorrin and Josh Ruffels, too. Joel Cooper is away on international duty.

Gillingham boss Steve Evans has made 16 summer signings, including former U’s players Jordan Graham and Alex MacDonald. Graham has already scored four times from seven appearances this season, having scored just once from 25 outings while at Oxford.

The U’s drew this fixture 1-1 last season, but won the home game 3-0. The Gills have won just once from the last 12 meetings between the two sides, a run that stretches back to 2012.

Predicted line-up: Simon Eastwood, Josh Ruffels, Elliott Moore, Sam Long, Sean Clare, Alex Rodriguez Gorrin, Cameron Brannagan, Anthony Forde, Mark Sykes, James Henry, Matty Taylor.

Prediction: Gillingham 1-2 Oxford United
