U’s Agree Deal for Sligo Rovers Captain

Sligo Rovers goalkeeper Ed McGinty is on the verge of joining Oxford United, according to the Irish Mirror.

The report suggests that a deal has been agreed between the U’s and the League of Ireland outfit.

The 22-year-old Scottish-born former Ireland U21 international, who had also attracted interest from Hearts and Dundee United last month, was left out of the Bit O’Red squad for their 2-0 home defeat to UCD.

Now, the U’s have swooped in to win the race to sign the goalkeeper, with confirmation of the move expected next week.

The report adds that the Irish club will receive a “five-figure fee” for the 22-year-old, who could still yet feature in Thursday’s Europa Conference League clash against Motherwell.

U’s boss Karl Robinson said following his side’s 2-0 defeat against Coventry that there are “two players flying across to this country this weekend.” Stuart Findlay appears to be the first, with McGinty now likely to be the other.

A move for a goalkeeper may come as a surprise with both Jack Stevens and Simon Eastwood sharing the role last season. However, with the former previously linked with a move to a Premier League club, bringing in a young goalkeeper with over 100 appearances may be a wise move.
