Match Preview: League One – Oxford United vs Gillingham

|

Oxford United will be looking to extend their unbeaten run to five games this weekend when Gillingham are the visitors to the Kassam.

In their last league game, the U’s secured a record away win in the Football League after an emphatic 6-0 win at Lincoln City, and on Wednesday night, Karl Robinson’s side progressed to the fourth round of the Carabao Cup after easing past West Ham United 4-0 at home.

Surprisingly, Robinson made six changes from the side that thrashed the Imps for their cup clash, but not only did it pay off, but it also shows depth at the club that wasn’t apparent at the start of the season.

One area of depth at the club is in midfield, where the U’s have one of the best in League One.

The Gills, meanwhile, have just two league wins this season – a 5-0 win over a youthful Bolton side and an impressive victory over in-form Wycombe. They also suffered a narrow defeat last weekend against Ipswich Town.

Gillingham may have played a game less than the U’s, but despite their lowly position, they’re only two points behind.

It’s unclear what eleven Robinson will field given that all of his players have performed in recent weeks, but I would expect him to field a strong line-up in the hope of continuing this run.

For the visitors, former U’s loanee Alex Jakubiak has netted four from eight games, and Mikael Ndjoli has three from seven.

The U’s have won six of the last ten meetings between the sides, with the Gills only win coming in their most recent encounter.

Predicted line-up: Simon Eastwood, Josh Ruffels, John Mousinho, Rob Dickie, Chris Cadden, Alex Rodriguez Gorrin, Cameron Brannagan, Mark Sykes, Tariqe Fosu, James Henry, Matty Taylor.

Prediction: Oxford United 2-0 Gillingham
