Preview: Carabao Cup Second Round – Oxford United vs Watford

|

Oxford United will be looking to bounce back from their League One defeat at Lincoln as they return to cup action against Watford.

The U’s struggled against Michael Appleton’s Imps on Saturday and face a Hornets side who won their first Championship game of the season against Middlesbrough.

Karl Robinson’s side saw off second-tier opposition in this competition last season, beating Millwall at Grenoble Road to set up a third-round tie against West Ham United.

Watford eased past Coventry City at this stage last season, before edging past Swansea City in the third round.

The winner of the tie will face a trip to the victor of the game between Newport County and Cambridge City.

For Watford, it will be their first-ever visit to Grenoble Road, with the two sides last meeting coming in a 0-0 draw at The Manor in March 1999.

From 38 meetings between the two sides, Watford have been victorious on 17 occasions, whilst there have been 14 draws. The U’s have recorded just seven wins against the Hornets, with their most recent coming in May 1993 with a 1-0 win at Vicarage Road.

The U’s are without both Alex Rodriguez Gorrin and Josh Ruffels through injury, but Joel Cooper looks set for his first start of the season.

Predicted line-up: Simon EastwoodSean Clare, Elliott Moore, John Mousinho, Sam Long, Liam Kelly, Marcus McGuane, Cameron BrannaganJoel Cooper, James Henry, Matty Taylor.
