Oxford United have made their second signing of the summer after former loanee Jordan Thorniley put pen to paper on a permanent deal.

The 26-year-old joined the U’s on a season-long loan from Blackpool for the 2021/22 season but was recalled by the Seasiders in January.

The defender helped the club reach the Championship, where he made 30 appearances this season, but was unable to stop an immediate return to the third tier.

The centre-back, who can also cover at left-back, started all 25 games during his previous time at Oxford and quickly became a fan favourite.

He was released at the end of the season following Blackpool’s relegation.

Speaking to the club’s official website, he said: “This is a club I know well following my time on loan. To have the chance to come back is a fantastic opportunity for me and one I couldn’t turn down.

“The way Liam Manning wants to play really suits me and I believe I can develop here. I’ve been really impressed by the ambition of the club and can’t wait to get started.”

Manning added: “Jordan is a player we’ve been tracking for some time, and we’re delighted to get this one done.

“He’s a very technical defender and has all the attributes we are looking for. He reads the game well, is comfortable with the ball at his feet and good in one-on-one situations. We think he’ll do very well in the system we play.”

Head of recruitment Ed Waldron said: “Jordan is another great addition to our squad and someone who will only get better working under Liam. We are all looking forward to seeing him back in an Oxford United shirt.”
